One of the most legendary music videos I remember from last century is Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai, where Jay Kay danced in a single shot through a constantly shifting environment. Every friend I had in the late 1990s talked about the moving floor. But it wasn't the floor that moved. It was the entire basement. Moving the floor in different directions was too expensive, so they moved everything around it instead. Virtual illusion. Optical insanity.

Thirty years later, Beefeater 0.0 released an ad where Jay Kay is dancing to the same song, with an alcohol-free gin and tonic in his hand.

Bringing a classic with a twist

Thirty years after the original video, the alcohol-free gin partnered with Jamiroquai and Lucky Generals to bring Jay Kay back to the dancefloor. But this time the floor actually moved.

Directed by Julien Quentin and produced by Magma Studios, the ad captures Jay Kay moving through different environments and brand moments as the world shifts around him. The inversion of the original production constraint is the campaign's sharpest creative idea: what was impossible in 1996 is the centrepiece of 2026. An upgrade to an old idea that made it look like a new one.

An ode to analogue craft

At a time when CGI and AI production are becoming the default, Beefeater and the directors made a deliberate choice to go the other way. Nine sets were built by hand, precise camera movements choreographed manually, and a physical floor mechanism engineered to shift beneath Jay Kay as he danced. The result is a campaign that couldn't have been generated. Only made.

The choreography itself was conceived by Jay Kay, making his artistic expression structurally inseparable from the ad, just as it was from Jonathan Glazer's video three decades ago. The brand didn't borrow Jamiroquai's credibility. They gave Jay Kay the floor and let him do what he does.

In 2026, building nine sets by hand when a prompt could generate them in seconds is a creative statement. Beefeater made it look effortless and culturally relevant.
